Title: The Foundational Paradigm and Critical Expansion of Novel-to-Music Research: A Review of Werner Wolf’s The Musicalization of Fiction: A Study in the Theory and History of Intermediality

Abstract: Werner Wolf’s The Musicalization of Fiction: A Study in the Theory and History of Intermediality transforms “musicalization of fiction” from impressionistic criticism into an analyzable academic topic through the lens of intermediality theory. It establishes a distinction between “thematisation” and “mimicry”, identifies three pathways of realization, and develops a multi-layered evidentiary framework, while tracing the historical trajectory of English novel musicalization from the 19th to the 20th century. While affirming its paradigmatic innovation, this article points out lingering theoretical issuessuch as media essentialism, limitations in canonical narratives, neglect of reception dimensions, and insufficient attention to the transformation of mass mediawith the aim of providing reference for further development in cross-medial studies.
