Editors-in-Chief Introduction
Professor Zhang Lei
ZHANG Lei is a professor and doctoral supervisor at the School of Foreign Studies, China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL), currently serving as associate dean of the school. He is the leader of the foreign literature direction in the discipline of foreign language and literature, and has been selected for the “Qianduan Sheng Young Scholar” program of CUPL. He holds a Ph.D. in British and American Literature from Beijing Foreign Studies University, and has served as an honorary visiting scholar at the Faculty of English, University of Cambridge, UK, and the Faculty of Arts, University of Auckland, New Zealand.
He serves as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Literature and Music Studies. He is also a guest researcher at the Research Center for World Literature and Shared Human Values at Renmin University of China, an adjunct researcher at the British and American Literature Research Center of Zhengzhou University (a key research base of humanities and social sciences in Henan Province), a guest professor at Minnan Normal University, a member of the Discipline Development Advisory Committee of the School of Foreign Languages at Southwestern University of Finance and Economics, and an adjunct doctoral supervisor at Yanbian University. He also serves as vice president of the Professional Committee for Translation and International Communication of Traditional Chinese Medicine under the China Association for the Promotion of Traditional Chinese Medicine, an expert in the National Multilingual Translation Talent Pool of the Translation Institute of the China International Communications Group, a standing council member of the Professional Committee on Reading Studies of the China Association for Comparative Studies of English and Chinese, and a long-time columnist for Philharmonic, an influential music magazine published by SDX Joint Publishing Company.
He has delivered keynote speeches at the International Forum on “Narrative and Media” at Peking University, the “Doris Lessing: Border Crossings” International Symposium at Southwestern University of Finance and Economics, and the 10th International Conference on Law, Language and Discourse at Zhejiang Gongshang University. He also moderated the international scholars’ panel at the “Doris Lessing: Border Crossings” symposium.
His research focuses on two major interdisciplinary areas: foreign literature and music studies, and foreign literature and law studies, as well as frontier theories of foreign literature/culture, literary translation, and legal translation. He has led and completed over ten research projects, including the National Social Science Fund Youth Project “Music Narrative in Contemporary English Novels (1990‑2015)” and the Beijing Social Science Foundation project “A Study of British and American Music Novels in the New Century”. His academic papers have been published in leading domestic and international journals such as Music & Letters, Foreign Literature, DUSHU, Social Science Research, and Journal of Henan University (Social Sciences). He has published dozens of papers in A&HCI and CSSCI‑indexed journals, many of which have been reprinted in full by the Renmin University Copy Center. He has also published seven academic monographs and two translated works.
The courses he taught have been recognized as university-level first-class courses, model courses for values education, and postgraduate quality courses, as well as model postgraduate courses with integrated moral and civic content. The undergraduate theses he supervised have been rated as “Outstanding Undergraduate Graduation Theses (Papers) in Beijing Higher Education Institutions”. He has received honors such as “Outstanding Teacher of CUPL”, “Special Teaching Award”, and “Excellent Postgraduate Supervisor”, and has won first prizes for undergraduate teaching achievements and postgraduate teaching achievements, as well as a second prize for young teachers’ outstanding research achievements at CUPL.
Furthermore, he has actively promoted the construction of academic communities. He has organized the “CUPL Foreign Literature Young Scholars Forum” for nine consecutive years, held thirteen sessions of the “Literature and Law Forum”, and long chaired the “Frontier Theories of Foreign Literature Reading Club”. He has played a significant leading role in interdisciplinary research and the cultivation of young talents.
Professor Wang Xicong
Wang Xichong, Ph.D. in Literature, is an Associate Professor and Doctoral Supervisor at the School of Chinese Language and Literature, Hubei University. He is a recipient of the Shahu Scholar Award, a young composer, and a writer. He serves as a Council Member of the Hubei Provincial Association of Foreign Literature, a Council Member of the AI Humanities Research Committee of the Chinese Association for Comparative Study of Languages and Cultures, and Executive Vice Chairman and Secretary-General of the Musical Theatre Committee of the Hubei Provincial Musicians Association. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the international journal Journal of Literature and Music Studies. He has published dozens of papers in major academic journals, including Interdisciplinary Studies of Literature, Foreign Literature Studies, Foreign Literatures, Journal of Hubei University (Philosophy and Social Sciences Edition), and Fudan Journal of Foreign Languages and Literatures. He leads a National Social Science Fund Youth Project on "Musical Writing in British Modernist Novels" and has additionally directed five provincial and ministerial projects, including a Hubei Provincial Philosophy and Social Science Project and a Key Project of the Hubei Provincial Department of Education. In 2023, he published the monograph Musical Writing in Hardy's Novels with Social Sciences Academic Press (China).
Wang's research areas include interdisciplinary studies of literature and music, transmedia narrative studies, AI emotional narrative studies, and ethical literary criticism. In recent years, his work has been published in prominent journals indexed by A&HCI and CSSCI. His review article "The Riddle of Sphinx in the Post Human Era: on Guo Wen’s research of Study on Literary Criticism of Clone Science Fiction" was published in the A&HCI journal Interdisciplinary Studies of Literature, examining posthuman ethical symptoms during the period of scientific choice and highlighting the didactic value of science fiction. Over the past five years, he has published six high-level papers in authoritative journals such as Foreign Literature Studies, Foreign Literatures, Fudan Journal of Foreign Languages and Literatures, and Journal of China University of Political Science and Law. Notably, he published five CSSCI-indexed papers in 2025, covering studies on canonical writers such as Hardy, Woolf, and McEwan, as well as theoretical construction and methodological exploration of "musical writing." His papers have been reprinted on CNKI more than 30 times, generating significant academic impact. His representative monograph, Musical Writing in Hardy's Novels (Social Sciences Academic Press, 2023), has been acclaimed by the academic community as a pioneering work with "theoretical inspiration" and has been frequently cited in master's and doctoral dissertations, with its academic significance recognized in a major review published in the Fudan Journal of Foreign Languages and Literatures.
Wang is also a renowned cross-media creator. He was named to the Dangdang.com Influential Writers List for three consecutive years (2017, 2018, and 2019). He has collaborated with internationally renowned musicians including Lang Lang, Warren Mok, Yuja Wang, and Karen Mok. In 2017, he served as Music Director for the launch ceremony of Hunan TV's "National Reading Season." In 2015, his original song "You Are My Rose," co-created with Korean singer The One, ranked second on the Chinese Music Chart. His single "Promise the Future" surpassed one million views on Xinhua News Agency's platform. He has composed music for feature films including Kangding Love Song (2010), Three Unmarried Mothers (2012), Yesterday Once More (2016), and Those Women (2018), and has held multiple solo concerts at the Wuhan Qintai Concert Hall. He has published a series of music-literary works, including You Once Lived in My Time (2018), The World Has One More Mr. Me (2016), and The Squandering Age (2013), exploring and interpreting the diverse possibilities of art.
