Title: Rehear “a Macrocosmic Musical Composition”: Start from Schafer’s The Soundscape: Our Sonic Environment and the Tuning of the World

Abstract: Nowadays, the definitions of traditional music are increasingly diverse, to the extent that the musicians can be anyone and anything that sounds. Therefore, Raymond Murray Schafer treats the world as “a macrocosmic musical composition” in The Soundscape: Our Sonic Environment and the Tuning of the World, documenting various soundscapes from the natural soundscape to the industrial soundscape, then to acoustic design, with the musical perception throughout the book. To date, this book has been of forward-looking and leading value in the field of world soundscape research, and his interdisciplinary ambition, sharp criticism and poetic writing are of great advantage. However, the book reveals deficiencies in the problem domain and agency of soundscape, noise legislation, media adaptability, and Chinese translation. These overlooked “sounds” are to be reheard in the new era, and pathways for the contemporary reactivation of Schafer’s project are to be proposed in a new musical structure of intro, verse, interlude, chorus, and outro, in the hope of building a new world of soundscapes.
