Title:  “A Lens with Sharp Edges but a Blurred Centre”: A Review of Jacques Attali’s Noise: The Political Economy of Music

Abstract: In Noise: The Political Economy of Music, Jacques Attali redefines musical ontology through the concept of “organized noise,” constructs a four-stage historical model of “Sacrificing–Representing–Repeating–Composing,” and advances the radical proposition that transformations in musical forms precede and possess prophetic qualities with respect to social institutional change, thereby challenging the linear determinism of the traditional base-superstructure paradigm. Noise  demonstrates significant paradigmatic import in interdisciplinary integration, the auditory turn, and cultural critique; yet the core concept of “noise” is fraught with logical inconsistencies that prevent its theoretical connotations from being fully elucidated, while the “prophetic theory of music” suffers from fatal deficiencies of unfalsifiability and obscure causal mechanisms.Taken as a whole, Noise exhibits a coexistence of heuristic value and theoretical limitation: although Attali’s ambitious scholarly endeavor sacrifices a degree of analytical rigor, it nonetheless furnishes a critical point of departure for the sociology of music and, more broadly, for the field of socio-cultural critique.

Keywords: Noise: The Political Economy of Music; Jacques Attali; cultural criticism
