Title: Introducing, Constructing, and Transcending: A Review of Fu Xiuyan’s A Study of Auditory Narratology

Abstract: Fu’s A Study of Auditory Narratology introduces key western auditory theories such as “soundscape” and “auscultation,” providing essential conceptual tools for Chinese narratology and addressing the long-standing imbalance caused by visual centrism. However, rather than merely transplanting these theories, Fu reconstructs them within the context of Chinese philosophical traditions, particularly the notions of sensory integration and auditory primacy. Through a “re-listening” to classical Chinese literature, he uncovers latent auditory experiences and establishes a culturally grounded framework of auditory narratology. Finally, by introducing the ontological proposition of “Spontaneous Resonance of All Things” from Chinese philosophy to auditory studies, the work transcends the Western binary opposition between vision and hearing. Overall, Fu’s work expands the perceptual scope of narratology and contributes to the construction of a distinct Chinese theoretical discourse, although challenges remain in translating its metaphysical insights into concrete methodological practices.
