Title: Robert Frost’s “Sound of Sense”: Theory and Practice

Abstract: “The sound of sense” proposed by Robert Frost is central to his poetic creation and critical thought. This theory emphasizes the role of sound in conveying meaning in poetic language, arguing that poetry is first and foremost an art of the ear, and that the sound of a sentence is inseparable from its meaning. This paper systematically reviews Frost’s theoretical statements on “the sound of sense” and analyzes its practice in his poetry from three perspectives: dramatic monologue and dialogue, combinations of sound elements, and the use of poetic meter, with detailed examinations of specific poems. The study shows that through dramatic techniques, nuanced sound arrangements, and flexible applications of traditional meters, Frost enables meaning to be directly presented in the act of reading aloud, creating a distinctive style that combines the vitality of spoken language with artistic tension. “The sound of sense” not only provides a key to understanding Frost’s poetics but also offering valuable insights for re-examining the relationship between sound and meaning in contemporary poetic practice and criticism.

Keywords: Robert Frost; the sound of sense; sound symbolism; dramatic monologue; meter and rhyme
