Title: On the Writing of Community and Its Musical Representation in The Waves
Abstract: Traditional studies on the musicalization of Woolf’s works have focused on cross-media narrative effects, while paying less attention to the reflections on community embedded in the relations among narrative voices. The critique of totality and identity advanced by the sociology of music, represented by Adorno, offers a critical framework for examining the relationship between music and community in the novel. From this perspective, The Waves not only presents the aesthetic characteristics of both classical and modernist music, but also embodies the complex dialectic of modernist community where commonality and difference coexist. Woolf attempts, through literary imagination, to envision a non-homogeneous form of community: an open structure capable of accommodating difference and singularity. In this sense, the novel reflects a modernist writer’s sustained reflection on and pursuit of the question of community.
